B&H Party + PhotoPlus Expo Recap

B&H Party + PhotoPlus Expo Recap

Last week was Photo Week here in NYC.    Each year in October there’s a big photography convention at the Javits Center – PDN PhotoPlus Expo where there are tons of workshops and lots of vendors set up for photographers to check out the latest and greatest products to offer their clients.  There’s also the latest in equipment as well.  Always fun to check out the newest cameras!!

During this same week, B&H Photo also has their annual party in conjunction with Maine Media Workshops.  This year I dragged Tony (the hubbs) along to keep me company at the party.  It was so much fun to be OUT!!  Something I need to start doing more often.  Here are a few of the highlights from the party…

David Brommer from the B&H Event Space was there to meet and greet everyone.  Always fun to see him!!

Another B&Her – Gabe – he taught a mini workshop for my photography camp kids two summers ago.  The kids LOVED him!

Lots of food and drinks!!  The things that look like cake pops are actually frozen treats.  Tasted like sorbet dipped in the same candy coating you use for cake pops.  I’ll have to try making these one day!

There were also two photographers there that I recognized and got my nerve up to say hello to.  One of them was Dane Sanders – unfortunately I didn’t get a photograph of him. I’ve read his Fast Track books and have watched a bunch of his online interviews on his website.  He was as nice in person as I imagined him to be.  We were standing  next to each other during the raffle.  Didn’t win a thing!!!

Then there was Chase Jarvis.

I’m not the star struck type of person.   Normally.

Living in NY there’s always someone famous walking around.  Tony is always pointing them out to me and I either never recognize them, don’t know who he is talking about, or just don’t care.   This time I was like a little school girl.  It took me 10 minutes to get my nerve up to go say hello and tell him how grateful I am for creating creativeLIVE – an amazing online educational resource for photographers (and more).  I’m addicted!!

When I finally did get up my nerve I tapped him on his arm and he didn’t even flinch!  Tried again and still nothing.  I finally had to really grab his arm and I have to say, he was also sooooo nice and friendly!!  I don’t know why it’s so scary to approach people you admire.  I have found the people I have met in the photo industry to be so nice.  It’s really an amazing group of individuals!

The next day I headed over to the Javits Center for the Expo.

I caught a few of the presentations from some photographers I admire.

Photographers at PhotPlusExpo 2013

Me Ra Koh (top left) – I always make sure to see her at the expo.  She is very inspiring especially for women photographers.

Tamara Lackey (top right) –  I went to her workshop a few years ago at Adorama.  I really like her personality – not too serious mixed in with a bit of sarcasm.  Love that!!

Andy Katz (bottom left)- I saw him recently on creativeLIVE – amazing travel photographer (and loves wine!)

Olivie Bee  (bottom right) – I didn’t actually see her but I saw her giant photograph at the entrance to the expo.  I recognized her name from an article I read about her in New York Magazine.  So excited to see her work up there!

I also spotted Lindsay Adler in a striking red dress but she was talking with someone so I didn’t get the chance to say hello.  I went to a few of her workshops at B&H before her career exploded!!

Also saw Bambi Cantrell – another photographer that I have watched on creativeLIVE.  By now it was much easier for me to go up to people so I did get a chance to say hello and introduce myself.  She was so much shorter than I expected!  On creativeLIVE she looks so tall!!  She was so sweet and actually thanked ME for saying hello to her.  Wow!!

I really love the industry I’m in.  It’s so creative and inspiring and filled with lots of amazing people – many of whom I look up to  in many ways.

Now I have lots of catalogs to go through!  Pick out the best products to offer my clients!

Do you have people in your industry that you look up to?  Are they approachable?
