When I was growing up, we would spend our summers in the Catskills at a bungalow colony and stay through Labor Day. My parents didn’t drive so we drove with my mom’s cousin Sammy and his family – all packed into a light blue station wagon. We would get home at the end of Labor Day Weekend, unpack our stuff and later that evening, Sammy would pick us up to go down to the San Gennaro Feast. It was the same routine year after year and we always looked forward to it.
My girls were off from school Monday and Tuesday so I thought it would be fun to go down to Little Italy and take them to the San Gennaro Feast, just as I had always gone.
After whining and complaining about one thing or another, they finally agreed to go. We took the subway and headed on our way.
I brought my real camera with the intentions of getting some cool shots at the festival. What ended up happening was my girls going into panic mode about how crowded it was and as soon as I took out my camera they freaked.
“Mom!! Put your camera away! You almost lost us!”
I couldn’t lose them even if I tried! (not that I would of course) They were holding on to me for dear life!! So NOT the city girls I hoped they would be!
So, back into the bag went my camera and out popped the iPhone. They weren’t happy with that either but I think they knew they had no choice at that point.
Rides, games (luckily they didn’t win a fish this time) and food. I of course wanted festival food. That’s why we were there right?!? No. They wanted to go to a restaurant. They were missing the whole point!!
We ended up at Positano. My daughter had Penne Pesto. I loved it! Very rich. Afterwards they ended up getting a caramel apple and Italian Ices. I spotted my favorite street snack of all – candy grapes! I got so excited but they said they wouldn’t be ready for another half an hour.
Do you think I ever got those grapes? Of course not!!
I am hoping to go back sometime this week.
Alone.
For street photography, festival food and most importantly, candy grapes.
Do you have a Little Italy in your city? For you NYers, did you get to go to the Feast this year? What is your favorite street food?

Oh my gosh you are brave! I’m terrified is street fairs – with kids. I am scared of loosing them! But it looks like a lot of fun. I hope you get back there for some real photos.
