Last month i was asked to shoot a Purim Carnival at the local Y here in Riverdale. For those of you not familiar with Purim, it’s kind of like a Jewish version of Halloween. People get dressed up in costumes, have treats and celebrate. That’s the quick and dirty version. Honestly, I don’t really know the long and clean version. 🙂
The building was festively decorated for the occasion.
During Purim, a traditional sweet to eat is a hamentashen – a triangle shaped cookie filled with preserves – usually apricot, raspberry or prune. I’ve even seen poppy seed and chocolate but raspberry is my favorite. Last year I attempted to bake them and it bombed, so this year I took the easy way out and went to a bakery. Easy and delicious!
I thought this was a really fun and creative interpretation..
They had different booths set up with games and craft activities for the kids.
I had my own booth for Purim Portraits. The kids looked so cute in their costumes! Even my own girls got into the act. Yep, that Doris Day wig makes yet another appearance!
Sometimes we all need a quiet moment…
or just get upset that your sister is winning more prizes than you are…and probably WON’T share.
This shot was one of my favorites – you could just feel the close friendship between these two
I had a private online gallery setup on my SmugMug site for parents to view and order prints.
It was a really fun event for the community and I was happy to be a part of it.
I’ll be back at The Y tonight photographing HAIRSPRAY. It’s a great show so if you want something fun to do tonight, come on by.
I’ll be in the back with my camera!

Purim looks like fun! There’s a large Jewish community here where I live so I know something about the different Jewish holidays. I didn’t know there were cookies involved though. I’ll have to try to search some out.
Love,
Heather

You’re too late Heather but I’m sure you’ll be able to find tons of matzo now! This week is Passover.
Thanks Crystal!
