B&H Photo Portfolio Development Series: Crit #2

On Monday I was back at B&H Photo for a second crit as part of the portfolio development series I’m a part of.  We each had to submit 3 of our favorite new images since we last met.

Sitting in a room full of people, having your images up on a big screen for everyone to see is always uncomfortable but I have to say, it’s getting  a bit easier the more I do it.   I knew in my head what they were probably going to say so my attitude was “bring it on!  I can handle it!! ”

These were the 3 images I selected…

From the Mother Gothel inspired session with my older daughter

They liked the first one best which I’d have to agree.  It was so opposite of how I usually photograph kids – just being real – kids being kids.  This one was thought out.  I had a story and inspiration from Mother Gothel, I planned out the location as well as the wardrobe.    I may continue with a fairytale theme.  I even have  a vision of my younger daughter as a crazy Mad Hatter!

One critique which I knew they would say is that they were all different – one in color and even though the other 2 are black and white, they’re different tones.  So they encouraged me to pick a tone and stick with it or go color!

The suggestion was that when photographing people, there should always be a warm tone to their skin – even if it’s black and white.  I tend to think that way when I’m doing work for my clients but for my own work, I don’t mind if the black and white tones are cold. I actually like it as shown in the 3rd image.

Time to start planning more sessions as it’s getting closer to possibly being selected as part of the gallery show in Soho this summer.  I’m on a mission!!
