B&H Photo Portfolio Development: Mother Gothel Inspired

B&H Photo Portfolio Development: Mother Gothel Inspired

I’ve been plugging along – working on images for the B&H Portfolio Development series.  I’m still experimenting – not quite having a set direction but it’s fun to try things that I don’t normally do.

For this set my older daughter posed for me.  I was inspired by Mother Gothel for this session.  You know – the evil mom from the Rapunzel story.  My daughter has great hair and I just had a vision of her wearing a hooded cape.   It pays to have  a friend who’s a consume designer!  I borrowed a cape from her and went to a store called Conway to get a really inexpensive dress.  I wanted something long, fluffy and in the reddish orange color range. and didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it since I knew we’d be traipsing through the woods.  I think I spent $7!  What a deal!

My daughter rarely lets me photograph her these days.  She’s at that tween age!  She allotted me a half an hour of her time only because it was around my birthday!  She was pretty moody as you can see from her expression but fortunately I go for moody in my images.

We did this back in November at the peak of Fall foliage but I wanted to give it a more artsy, fairytale, mystical feel so I deepened the colors.

This next one I kept truer to the original colors.  Because I used my 70-200 lens with a wide aperture of 2.8, it blurred all of the leaves in the background and gave it this swirly, painterly feel.

Because I can’t help myself, I also had to try it in black and white.  I like both versions – they have a completely different feel from each other.

Before I knew it, my half hour was up!

Yesterday I went back to B&H for another crit session.  I’ll write about it in a separate post.

I have more classes to attend and more ideas to explore as I make my way through this portfolio development series.
