Fleeting Moment – NYC Subway Ride

This week I was working on a new segment for my blog called “Fleeting Moments” where I would talk about having your camera ready and being aware of your surroundings so you’ll be ready to capture those fleeting moments.

Then a weird thing happened. I was at B&H Photo on Tuesday for a workshop on Event Photography (which was great by the way) when David Brommer (the guy in charge of the B&H event space) was telling me about another event happening the following day. He thought I would really connect with the photographer and he highly suggested I come. So, with a little (actually a lot) of schedule coordinating, I made it down there again.

This time the event was on Intuitive Photography presented by a photographer named Mindy Veissid. Boy was David right!! Did you ever have those experiences where you meet someone for the first time and then you have that feeling like you were supposed to meet? That’s how I felt. As I was listening to her speak, I kept getting that “oh, I do that” or “that’s happened to me” moments over and over again.

We both started out in a tech career but always had a creative side. The way she approached her photography – more about intuition than technical is exactly how I taught my Photography Workshops For Kids this summer. Then to top it off, she’s a NYC girl with CURLY HAIR!!! You know that’s always an instant bond.

That’s one of the things I love about the B&H event space – more than just the great workshops, the networking and connections you can make are great as well.

So, what do “fleeting moments” have to do with this? Mindy spoke about this as well, which ties it back to how it’s so weird and ironic that I met her and it was already on my brain this week.  See, I eventually made it back to where I started!  Kind of like that  book “If You Give  A Pig A Pancake” – all over the place but eventually has a point.  My girls love that one!

Fleeting Moment – NYC Subway Ride

I was on the subway with my girls heading down to Central Park.  Riding the subway is an adventure for them since they don’t do it very often. I always have my camera in hand when we go out because you just never know what’s going to happen – there’s always something. As they were looking out the window, for a split second I saw my little one’s reflection in the metal wall and my older one was perfectly centered between her and her reflection. I immediately snapped away.

I love the almost ghostlike feeling of this shot and I’m also drawn to reflections.

So, keep your camera handy and pay attention to your surroundings!
