Holiday Photo Tip: Family Traditions

Holiday Photo Tip: Family Traditions

The holiday time is a perfect time to have your cameras handy for all of the special moments with family and friends.  I just want to remind you about some other things to photograph.  I’ve been giving some photo tips in my weekly newsletter but thought I’d share one here as well.

Do you have any special family traditions during the holidays?  I’m sure you do!  Start photographing them!!  We have a bunch but there are 3 in particular that stand out in my mind.

Decorating Gingerbread Houses

This past weekend the girls and I went to Michael’s (one of my favorite stores) to get our annual gingerbread house kits.  Usually we get the standard ones that you see here but this year we mixed it up a bit because we saw 2 different kits.  My younger daughter got this traditional house and my older daughter got a tiny village kit that came with 4 mini houses.

They both of course came with plenty of candy but they broke out their Halloween stash to add to it.

I always assemble the structure for them using my hot glue gun.  I feel like it holds better than to use the icing as the glue.  But then they just go to town with the decorating!  Fun and messy!

She spent so much time on this one little house!  Maybe she forgot there were 3 others to do!

Playing Hide The Pickle

Each year we have a Christmas Eve celebration at our home with my family. My mom, sister and her family all come over to eat and open family presents.  And… play hide the pickle!   We learned this from our friends in Florida.  It was their holiday tradition and now for at least 6 years it’s ours.  You get an ornament that looks like a pickle and hide it somewhere in the tree  The kids (or everyone) have to find it and they get a prize.  We do at least 4 rounds so each kid will get a prize.  Which reminds me, – still need to get some prizes!

I love how excited the kids get when they find the pickle!!

Getting  New Ornaments

Each year we add to the collection.  Tony and the girls picked up a few on the eve of Black Friday.  This cute owl was one of my favorites!

So think about what some of your family holiday traditions are and don’t forget to photograph them. They’re part of your story!
