A couple of weeks ago, myself, along with about 100 other people met up at the Bronx Zoo for a photo safari with B&H Photo led by Nature and Travel Photographer David Cardinal.
It was a great turnout!
I was really surprised at the amount of gear people brought. Giant lenses, multiple camera bodies, tripods, monopods, you name it. I think I even saw someone with a suitcase! I was on the other end of the spectrum – one camera body, 2 lenses. I like to travel lightly.
We started off at the Sea lions – watching them get fed.
The Bronx Zoo videographer was amongst the crowd filming their next Sea Lion promo video. Cool job!
We then made our way over to the Flamingos. B&H even brings extra lenses if people want to try them out. I got to try Canon’s 300mm lens but I only managed to use it for about 5 minutes. That sucker is HEAVY!!! It was pretty cool though.
I also got to use it again when we were over by the lions. Wow!!!
Then this B&H guy asked if I wanted to use the Canon 70 – 200mm lens.
BIG mistake on his part – I pretty much monopolized the thing for the rest of the event. I gave him my lens to use in exchange but then felt pretty guilty towards the end and we swapped back. He was very nice about it Those friendly B&Hers!!
They were on hand every step of the way giving tips and answering questions.
I really enjoyed seeing the gorillas. They were very active and fun to photograph.
There were other animals of interest along the way…
The event wrapped up with a Q&A session and we were told there would be a flickr group created where we could post our 3 favorite photos from the day for a chance to win prizes. I love prizes!! The deadline for submitting is June 29th. Today! Whatta ya know! I actually remembered this morning and made the deadline!!
Check out the Bronx Zoo Photo Safari group on Flickr. There are some pretty cool photos in there!
This was a fun trip and it is getting me excited for the Photography Camp I’ll be running at the end of August. We’ll be taking the kids back to the Bronx Zoo for their own photo safari!
Do you like photographing animals?

I love your story about all the gear. My husband’s camera just keeps growing. It’s like the Borg.

Camera gear is addicting! I have my wish list. 🙂
