It’s hard to believe that last week it was still officially summer. Once school starts, the mental switch happens instantly. I didn’t have much of a chance to blog this summer so I’m doing some catch up now.
During the last week of August I ran a Photography Camp for kids ranging in age from 9 to 13. This was my 4th summer doing it. The week consisted of learning principles of photography such as perspective, angles, composition, light, use of flash, color and shape through various fun projects as well as outdoor field trips.
Here’s a recap:
During our trip to Wave Hill, we focused on nature, macro and landscape photography. There are many gardens to see and we also went on a nature walk on one of their shady trails. The shade was a blessing – that day was really hot!
Another day we went to The Bronx Zoo where we of course saw animals but I also told them to pay attention to other things going on at the zoo. When photographing the animals, we tried to focus on what made each animal unique. The zoo is a perfect place to practice zooming since many of the animals are far away.
This bear had a good old time scratching his back It was like a scene from The Jungle Book!
Rainbow hair – something you don’t see everyday!
I think the kid’s favorite trip was into the city to Central Park. What’s great is all of the unexpected sites like street performers and giant bubble blowers. There’s also lots of great architecture and details. They were exhausted by the end of the day!! Lots of walking!!
At the end of the week we end our time together with a gallery show and reception for the parents and friends to see what the kids have been working on during the week. They pick out their 3 favorite images, we have them printed as 8X10’s and they mount them and help set up the display.
Some exciting news for the kids happened at the end of that week. I’ll tell you about it tomorrow!
