Last summer my younger daughter took a karate workshop at the Summer Stage Performing Arts Camp. What does karate have to do with performing arts?!? They were doing the show Mulan so they wanted to tie in all aspects of the culture. Regardless, she really loved it especially when she was able to break a wooden board! She still has the broken pieces and is oh so proud!
So, when Fall came along, she asked if she could take Karate classes. Fortunately, the karate instructor from the summer had a program going on. We signed up and she had so much fun! She would come home and practice what she learned on daddy!! She had no mercy on him. He just loved that!
Julio (also known as Renchi)
and his wife Crystal (Sempai Crystal)
are the talented duo running Usa Goju-Ryu Karate Do, Inc. (Try saying THAT 3 times fast!) One thing lead to another and I ended up working with them – photographing Julio and Crystal and their classes for their new marketing materials.
I photographed the kids and adult classes so I was able to see firsthand how well their classes were run.
Seeing a roomful of kids in their karate uniforms was just beyond cute! The kids and adult classes seem to get a full workout. They were definitely fully engaged the whole time, learning their different karate and self defense moves. Classes are available during the week in the evenings as well as on the weekend so they really try to accommodate everyone’s schedule.
If you live in the Riverdale area and are considering karate classes for you or your kids, check out their facebook page for information. I am always happy to spread the word about services I have personally used and have been happy with!

That’s a great shot of him with the little girl. Totally captures what they’re about. Nice.
