Last week we headed up to the roof of our building to get a glimpse of the highly anticipated strawberry moon. I had my camera with me to photograph what was supposed to be a unique sight. We never did see that moon but I didn’t let that stop me from capturing some cherished moments of my daughter and nephews.
First off the light was great – almost approaching “golden hour” so everything did truly have that golden glow to it.
Tip #1: Pay attention to what’s happening around you
The kids just got their yearbook that day so they had it with them and were huddled around going through the pages. Just because the moon wasn’t there for me to photograph doesn’t mean there weren’t other things worthy of photographing.
Tip #2: Have patience and be an observer
When it comes to photography you need to pay attention to what’s happening, then be the observer – the fly on the wall. Have patience and wait for things to unfold naturally.
Tip #3: No cheese please!
When you observe what’s happening, wait for things to unfold naturally, there is no need to EVER say “kids look here – say cheese!” You will NEVER get that belly laugh that only happens naturally. Sometimes they laugh so hard you can’t tell if it’s a laugh or a cry – in this case I’m happy to say it was a laugh!
Tip #4 – It’s not all about the smiles and laughs
Sweet quiet moments are also great to capture. Body language tells a lot about relationships – how comfortable they are with one another. As they get older, they may not stay as close but you can seize the moment by photographing the relationship for what it is today – something they can look back on and remember. Don’t disrupt the moment by forcing anything or letting them become aware of your presence. Let them just be. That’s how you’ll get the most memorable images.
Tip #5 – Save for printing
Save your favorites to a “Favorites” folder to go back to later for creating a photo book or other printed product. Each year I create a calendar for my mom as one of her holiday gifts. It’s quicker and easier to look in one folder of favorites that trying to locate images “somewhere” on my computer.
I hope this helps! If you want to share one of your favorite photographs with a natural expression, just put a link in the comments. I’d love to check it out.
