Chip Chat: Lay’s Spicy Ketchup Chips

Hey Everyone!  I have  a new chip to discuss!  Are you ready?

During a recent Target run, I decided to stroll down the chip aisle just in case there was anything new.  Well, what do you know – I found 2 new flavors – Spicy Ketchup and Sweet Onion.  We’ll talk about Sweet Onion another time (still need to try them) but today let’s get into the Spicy Ketchup.

Spicy seems to be a theme here.  If you remember, my last Chip Chat was the Spicy Dill Pickle Chip.

I was intrigued by these chips because  my Canadian friend Steph told me about the ketchup flavor years ago when we were both living in Florida.   She said it was her favorite (and has to be Lay’s) and that she could only get them in Canada.  Well, now they’re at Target – at least the spicy variety, that is.

As a brand in general, I really like Lay’s chips.

Some of the things I like about Lay’s even apply to these spicy ketchup chips.

I like the texture, crunch and thickness.  They are on the thinner side which makes them more crispy than crunchy.  Unlike some other thicker chips, your mouth doesn’t have to work too hard to enjoy them.  Always a plus for me!!

 

Now let’s get down to flavor.  I enlisted a little helper for this one.  She was up for the challenge!

First up is the sniff test.

Seemed to pass so she went in for the taste.

Once the chip actually entered her mouth, the first reaction was “Ewww!  Spicy!  Get me water!!”

Then as it mellowed out she said ” First it was very spicy and now it is medium spicy”

OK, my turn.  I didn’t think it was really spicy.  Definitely not something I had to run and get water for.  I wasn’t loving the taste.  It didn’t have an overwhelming ketchup flavor.  To me it tasted like a modified BBQ flavor.  I wasn’t blown away.  I would be curious to hear from you BBQ chip lovers out there what you think.

Bottom line is I bought them over a week ago and most of the bag is still there.    Not a good sign!  I personally wouldn’t buy this flavor again.  If I’m ever in Canada, I’ll have to try the non spicy Ketchup flavor which seems to be all the rage!
